We recently upgraded several users to Microsoft Office 2016 from Microsoft Office 2013 and their Microsoft Exchange account stopped working.

No problem – lets just setup a new profile and add the account again!

Under “Add Account”, there is no option to set up an Exchange account. There are only two options:

  1. Outlook.com or Exchange ActiveSync compatible service
  2. POP or IMAP. The Microsoft Exchange Server service option is missing.

What?!

Exchange accounts can only be added to Microsoft Outlook 2016 using auto account setup. If autodiscover records aren’t published, the setup will fail and the account will not be setup.

This is a significant change from Microsoft Outlook 2013. If you want to use Microsoft Outlook 2016 with an Exchange account, please make sure all your ducks are in line and that autodiscovery etc is setup and working correctly.

Don’t have access to make changes to the DNS records?

Quickest option – downgrade to Microsoft Office 2013 ( if possible ).
